A Tapestry of Time: Mayan & Colonial Roots
Izamal was an important Maya religious center, flourishing from 600 BC to 800 AD, evidenced by its significant pyramids like Kinich Kakmó. After the Spanish conquest, Franciscan friars, led by Fray Diego de Landa, built the massive Convent of San Antonio de Padua in 1553, utilizing stones from the ancient Maya structures. This convent holds the second-largest atrium in the world, surpassed only by St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
